New Zealand has new sustainability goals. How can solar contribute?
A problematic rise in energy consumption, most evidently in the last decade, has raised an urgent call for action to increase New Zealand's use of renewable energy. Renewable energy sources can aid in mitigating climate change by providing an alternative energy source that benefits both the environment and economies. Minimising carbon pollution with large-scale and small-scale renewable energy projects has become a crucial pillar in sustaining the world's future.
New Zealand is currently ranked 26th on the global sustainability index with a score of 78.3, which indicates the progress towards achieving all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The environmental goals of the SDGs include:
6. Clean Water and Sanitation
7. Affordable and Clean Energy
11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
12. Responsible Consumption and Production
13. Climate Action
Global renewable energy consumption increased by a quarter from 2010 to 2020. There is a plan to improve this data by reducing New Zealand's emissions by 35% from 2017/2018 usage by 2025.
One of the prominent benefits of solar power installations is its reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional sources of energy such as burning fossil fuel, gas, and coal.
Solar power in NZ can reduce carbon emissions by collecting energy from the sun through photovoltaic (PV) panels often installed on residential roofs or farms. These solar panels absorb sun rays and convert them into electrical energy, which can be used immediately or stored in batteries.
Installing a household solar system or commercial solar will contribute to New Zealand meeting the United Nations SDG, affordable and clean energy goal and help New Zealand reach its 2025 target of reducing emissions by 35%.
Change has to start somewhere; every household that switches to solar will make a difference. When you start saving money and emissions, the word will get out, sharing the ideology with your friends, family, and neighbours.
